Blog 2 - Working with Stan's Cafe

Welcome to Week 2

13th February 2018

So this week included our first interim assessment, as I mentioned last week. In our own chosen groups we had to create a presentation with the brief of;

Presenting a rehearsed response to the research tasks that James Yarker set and provide an outline of your creative ideas for the performance.

In groups we all had to respond to at least one of the homework tasks which included:

  • Typing up text exchanges as a script
  • Listen to and report on what audio description for films and theatre is
  • Research Periscope and Facebook Live
  • Work out whether we can get multiple webcams streamed to one screen
  • List things that are special about live performances compared to mediated material
  • Suggest fictional or real situations in which a loss of internet connection could be emotionally impactful or humorous
  • Find cultural references which relate to live vs. mediated/surveillance
We also had to consider coming up with initial ideas for a concept for our performance. We were encouraged to present using a power point, including images, film footage, physical presentations of work/information and drawings.

The groups got to lesson all prepared, some choosing to simply stand and discuss their ideas, others using fellow students to take part in tasks, and others using film, sound and Skype to discuss any ideas we had for the performance.

Lots of ideas came out of these presentations, with all of them being very different and looking at similar themes through varied lenses. This excited us all and we all became very enthusiastic about ways in which ideas that had been presented could be developed and taken forward into our final performance.
Some ideas included:

  • A clone like society ruled by cameras - unison music, ensemble speech, identical costumes
  • Ethics of being under surveillance - using verbatim theatre
  • Mixing of the live space and the mediated space
  • Streaming performers into the live space to interact with the performers there

After we had all presented we used the last 45 minutes to discuss the ideas that had been presented, as well as decide on our logo and company name.

These are just some of the logos the media team created for the names the group had come up with (there were plenty more logos but you get the jist)

As a group we chose to become i2eye Theatre Collectiv, settling on the centre logo for our company.
